Telegram, the hottest messaging app in the world!

About 1.5M Korean downloaded it last week. Nearly 5M people signed up for it during WhatApp’s four hour down. It’s not clear why Telegram, German messaging app, is chosen as a good alternative following WhatsApp instead of LINE, Facebook messenger, Kakao Talk, or Kik. Security would be one of the reasons.

이번 텔레그램 사태를 보면서 핫하던 프리챌이 2000년대 초반 유료화 이슈로 한방에 훅 갔던 사건이 생각이 났다. 카카오/다음이 그렇게 허망하게 되리라 생각하지는 않지만, 온라인 기반 산업이 얼마나 이슈에 쉽게 영향을 받는가 다시금 생각하게 된다.

우리나라 상황과 별개 이야기인데 올초에 미국에서는 왓츠앱이 4시간 정도 다운 되자 많은 사람들이 텔레그램을 깔았었다. (참고로 미국은 카톡 대신 왓츠앱을 주로 쓰는데, 페이스북이 190억달라에 인수한 핫한 메세지 서비스다.)
